Coachella 2019 is right around the corner. Soon, you’ll be listening to booming tunes, spotting celebrities, and posting feature-film length instagram stories that’ll be the envy of your friend groups. Unfortunately, phone charging at Coachella can often be a trying process.
The music festival is a breeding ground for lasting memories and experiences, but, If there’s one thing the it is not equipped for, it’s mass charging. And during an event where you’ll want to record and snap as many pics and videos as possible, the idea of a drained phone is enough to lurch you awake at night.
Fortunately, some simple tips can go a long way towards keeping you powered through the entire weekend! Here are 5 tips for phone charging at Coachella 2019 you should keep in mind before the festivities.
1. Optimize Car Charging
Your car is your main base of operation for more than one reason. Not only is it your means of transportation, it can also function as your group’s charging hub. The issue with this, however, is that most cars’ USB ports offer pretty weak amperage. That means, yes, they can charge your devices, but not very quickly. The last thing you want is to be locked in your car siphoning power while you miss your favorite singer’s performance.
Consider investing in a car charger that supports fast charging. You may even want to consider one that supports charging stronger devices on the road such as your iPad.
Additionally, always make sure your car is on when you have devices plugged in and charging. After-all, the quickest way to ruin your after-Coachella-glow is to rely on AAA for a jump.
2. Adjust Your Phone Settings
Whenever you plan on being away from a charger for a prolonged period of time, optimizing your phone’s settings is always advised. Luckily, there are many ways in which you can optimize your phone’s battery life.
One thing we don’t recommend, however, is compulsively closing apps after you use them. Many mistakenly assume this is helpful in saving battery, but this is not the case. In fact, CEO of Apple Tim Cook himself even confirms doing so isn’t necessary in order to maintain battery life and could end up draining it.
A quick and easy step you can take is turning on “low power mode”. Doing so will disable background operations that drain your battery without your knowledge. These features include:
- Email fetching
- “Hey siri”
- Background app refresh
- Visual effects
- Icloud photo library
3. Bring (Multiple) Chargers
Phone charging at Coachella comes in the form of their “Power Cubes”. They’re a thoughtful amenity, but it’s important to keep in mind, however, that the festival is a bring-your-own-charger kind of event.
Power cubes are for charging mobile phones only. Do not charge external battery packs or attempt to power hair dryers, curling irons, air pumps or any other electronic device.
Not much of a shock, but you’d be smart to bring a few backup cables just in case. Whether you’re going with a group or know you’re prone to misplacing cables, that extra charger can save you and others some headaches.
Before you start toting bags and bags of cables, brush up on Coachella’s policies when it comes to charging. Their stations are for mobile phone charging only. This is definitely a little restrictive, but our next tip can help provide a solution.
4. Bring a Battery Pack
If there’s one event that screams “bring a battery pack”, it’s Coachella. Sure, their Power Cubes are a nice amenity, but there’s more you’ll need to power if you plan on staying the weekend. That’s where a high capacity battery pack can make all the difference.
With a battery pack, especially one with an AC outlet, you can charge it all. Wattage willing, everything from phones and laptops to hair dryers and curling irons are fair game.
Unfortunately, Coachella doesn’t allow battery bank charging at their Power Cubes. That’s why we recommend investing in a pack with heftier capacity. That way, you’re powered for multiple days and can even offer charging for your friends’ devices.
5. Go Solar
Building off our last point, outfitting your battery pack with a solar panel is also a smart choice. Coachella may not support battery bank charging, but the sun sure does! Charge your devices away from the crowded power cubes and, while you’re out and about, fill up your battery with solar power. Doesn’t sound like a bad idea, does it?
Phone Charging at Coachella Conclusion
Regardless of the limited provided phone charging at Coachella 2019, don’t let a dead battery ruin the show! Keep a few of these tips in mind and keep your phones, tablets, and more in perfect health without wrestling through crowds of people for an open outlet.
