Some people develop Nomophobia, which is the fear without your cell phone. You realise this feeling when you see your battery is dead or if you have left your phone at home, then comes the anxiety and concern.
Some people mention they feel secure if they carry their cell phone along with the charger. This is very much like an addiction. In fact, people are distracted from their normal course of day-to-day activities if they forget their phones at home.
It is strange but 66% people suffer from Nomophobia. This is the fear of being without your cell phones. There are different kinds of mobiles introduced every week in the market and technology is ever increasing. With these escalating figures, the case of Nomophobia increases by 13% every year.
SecurEnvoy performed a study on some people related to Nomophobia. It showed that 41% of the people carried two cell phones. Their main fear was they wanted to stray connected and did not want to loose connectivity.
If you ask people why they carry two or more cell phones, they would reply that just for a backup or to ensure themselves that they are always connected.
Ike mentions that when she was studying in University of San Diego she met with a traumatic event, which she cannot forget till date. Her phone battery was dead and this was the reason he could not call anybody for help. Currently she is undergoing a therapy with Morningside recovery Centre in Newport Beach. This is one of the first facilities to treat such cases in US.
One of the doctors who are treating Ike mentions the first thing, which they do, is take away the cell phones for 10 days. They want to make sure that patients mind is relieved of any distractions. However, it was noted that some people get bad to worse when their cell phones are taken away.
Nomophobia is connected with some other addictions like shopping, gambling or any drug use as it arises the urge of instant social connectivity.
In Morning side the treatment of this phobia is more of a behavioural modification. Here patients are given a new condition so that they adapt to new behaviours like a new coping skill. This will help them to manage their anxiety.
In Ike’s case she was using phone 70-75 times in a day either for messaging, surfing or chatting. In her case she was addicted to shopping so most of her online shopping was through her phone.
In adverse cases of Nomophobia, people start hearing their ring tones even if the phone is not ringing or they would hear some other ring tone.
There is an alarming case if you are ready to steal a cell phone or you desperately wants it even during bathing or dinner time. This case is slightly more in case of women. Age group 18 to 26 develop Nomophobia as compared to rest of the population.
The doctors and psychologists say that people are mostly glued to their phones as they want to keep a check on their social network sites like facebook or twitter. People are so curious to know what is happening in other life. This is definitely a kind of addiction. The first thing we do in the morning is check our status. This is definitely a phobia as people want to be connected and do not want to be loner.
