Google in IoT
According the ‘’The Information’’, Google is working for their new project “The Internet of Things”. Google may be the next big company to support The Internet of Things. Google has evolved software that could run on low-powered devices and give them the skill to communicate each other.
So far they are calling this project ‘Brillo’. But after Google’s I/O conference, that name might change again. It seems like Google is planning to release the software under the Android brand. The technology will help the manufacturers produce everything ‘’smart’’. According to the information, this software could be used for anything and everything you can imagine in today’s life.
In general the software is not yet crystal clear; there are a lot of question marks in the users’ mind of what the internet of things operating system will look like and how the customers will be able to use this software etc.
This new technology is developed for devices of 32MB and 64MB of RAM. It shows that it is a simple operating system and it is not necessary to make big changes for the hardware. It proves that it is effective for almost all mobile phones that have at least 32MB of RAM.
Microsoft also has some projects about Internet of Things (IoT). The name of the project for Microsoft’s version is Windows 10 IoT, and the company is planning to run their new operating system on ATM’s, ultrasound machines and some wearables as well.
On May 20 Huawei announced their 10 kilobytes sized Internet of Things project which connects IoT gadgets.
Samsung in the Market
Last year, Samsung jumped into the IoT market with their project ‘’SmartThings’’. With this project, SmartThings supported over 1,000 devices and 8,000 community-created applications. Those devices connect to the hub of SmartThings which can connect with mobile devices.
Samsung is also developing some consumer electronics; smart TVs, refrigerators, washers, vacuums, and other appliances which connect to the IoT technology. In 2014, that business got the fourth place of Samsung revenue ranking.
There are two ways to use Samsung’s IoT. The first way is to connect the devices to the hub of SmartThings through different connectivity standards. The second way is to install the application Tizen to reach unified software interface. Samsung has already put the application Tizen on several devices such as wearables, cameras, smartphones and some of their smart TVs.
The IoT technology will help to make their business components much stronger, manufacture processors, memory chips, and displays. Samsung manufactures many components for its mobile devices and TVs. It also manufactures chips for other mobile device manufacturers such as Apple. Manufacturing IoT chips could further diversify that business, which accounted for 32% of the top line last year.
All this news shows that, internet of things is still very uncertain today and the biggest technology companies are racing to take over this market. The next couple years will be extremely interesting for the fans of the IoT technology.
