Travel can be immensely therapeutic for more reasons than one. For some, a simple change in scenery can put a lot in perspective. For others, the cathartic experience of making new stories can fuel them for the rest of the year to come. That being said, whether you’re making good on a new year’s resolution to see the world or find yourself suddenly stricken with wanderlust, the conversation can’t start without a few things. The most important of these things being, entertainment for the plane ride, clothes, a reliable source of portable power, and, of course, a location! And if you aren’t the spontaneous type to simply throw a dart at a map and pack your things, some planning can go a long way. Fortunately, we have a short list compiled of the 10 best travel destinations for 2019!
Of course, your options are practically limitless so don’t be afraid to simply use our suggestions as a springboard. After all, no one knows which trip will be the most rejuvenative for you better than you!
1.) Peloponnese, Greece
Unlike Santorino and Mykonos, two heavy gathering points for tourists, Peloponnese promises an entirely authentic experience without all of the overcrowding. But what makes 2019 the perfect time to finally double down on that trip to Greece?
We’re glad you asked!
As a matter of fact, sometime within the first four months of the new year, the rail service linking the port city of Patras with Pyrgos in Peloponnese will finally be back in working order after being interrupted for seven excruciatingly long years!
What that means for you as a traveler is you’re now afforded the luxury of enjoying the thriving nightlife of Patras and the stunning views of Santorini’s capital city in the same trip! Pair that with attractions like Turkish bathhouses and the 10 mile stretch of beautiful shore at Kourouta Beach and you have a trip you won’t soon forget.
2.) Mexico City, Mexico
Beautiful sights are one thing, but traveling abroad also opens up a world of opportunity for those trying to experience new and exciting flavors and cuisine. Conversely, traveling to a place like Italy or Japan can give you the chance to experience all too familiar dishes in their most authentic and perfected forms.
Being based in California, we’re quite used to bragging about our selection of Mexican cuisine, but even we need to give it up to the restaurants and street food options over in Mexico City. For gourmet aficionados, restaurants like Pujol, headed by Enrique Olvera, offer a fascinating gastronomy spin on traditional cuisine.
For die-hard traditional fans, you can’t go wrong with any of the taco stands or street carts you find. Whether you’re in the mood for tacos al pastor, tamales, or even atole, know the capital is in the midst of a movement towards the revival and traditional preparation of indigenous strains of corn so deliciousness is all but guaranteed!
3.) Arles, France
Moving away from food (Don’t worry, we’ll be come back around.), Arles, France offers a dreamlike escape for artists of all styles and mediums. Photographers have the once in a lifetime opportunity to attend the Recontres d’Arles, a summer festival notorious for revealing some of the best photographers in the world to the general public.
If, however, you find yourself more attuned with the performative aspect of art, you can’t allow yourself to go home without a visit, or a few, to the Amphitheatre. Once the site for brutal gladiator fights and chariot races, the venue is now the stage for regularly held bullfights and concerts. Breath in the history and scale as your ears take in the tunes!
4.) Patagonia, Chile
We all need a quiet getaway from time to time. Fortunately enough for those who need a bit of alone time to reflect, locations like Patagonia, Chile exist. As one of the least populated regions across the world, Patagonia offers a quant, serene, and stunningly beautiful atmosphere for all who visit its sparsely occupied borders. Hikers can also take advantage of the Route of Parks, a 2800 km route freshly opened in 2018 that spans from Puerto Montt to Cape Horn. Even the hardest to impress nature fanatic is sure to appreciate the jaunt across 17 national parks and this beautiful country!
2019 also provides an interesting opportunity in the form of a total eclipse that will be visible from Patagonia! Star gazers and trailblazers alike will find the mountainous terrains to be the perfect escape from their daily routine.
5.) Chengdu, China
Chengdu, China is resoundingly known for two things: pandas and Sichuan cuisine. Visitors can pay a visit to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Starting with only 6 pandas that were rescued from the wild, the facility has grown exponentially and now operates as a conservation center and an educational tourism destination. The center is conveniently located a short distance away from the city center where you can enjoy the contemporary Chinese culture in which hip hop, luxury shopping, and a bustling LGBT population thrives.
Heat seekers can also start their salivating now as Chengdu offers delicious Sichuan-style staples such as dan dan noodles, hot pot, and mapo tofu. Experience a new world of cuisine and return home with a newly jaded sense of what “spicy” really means!
6.) Canterbury, New Zealand
To some, vacationing can mean something a little more physically demanding than simply hiking. And for those crazy individuals, we recommend GODZone, a multiday, expedition-style race centered in Canterbury, New Zealand.
Held between March 10-17, the race will feature a mix of trekking, mountain climbing, biking, climbing, and kayaking. If the thought of even enduring one or two of these activities is enough to make you feel weak in the knees, you’re still in luck!
Those not enjoying the race can still have fun watching the competitors and attending the pre and post race activities.
7.) Cairo, Egypt
History buffs will be happy to hear that the perfect vacation exists in the form of Cairo, Egypt. And while the location has many draws, the most exciting one by far is the 2019 opening of the 5.2-million-square-foot Grand Egyptian Museum in the Giza Plateau.
Costing over a billion dollars to erect, the museum has already been billed as the world’s largest devoted to a single civilization. Over 50,000 ancient objects are slated to be displayed but they can hardly live up to the main exhibit: King Tutankhamun’s entire burial collection numbering up to more than 5,000 individual pieces! Of course, this does nothing to dissuade you from experiencing the jaw-dropping views that come with expeditions across any of Egypt’s awe-inspiring pyramids and sphinxes!
8.) Berlin, Germany
2019 marks a very significant year for Berlin, Germany. More specifically, it’ll mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. And no one in Berlin will be able to avoid the festivities as countless exhibits and performances are being set up to celebrate the city’s growth throughout the years!
The best part about the celebration is that it’ll be lasting all year! Starting in January with an opening festival at the Akademie der Kunste, travelers can enjoy lectures, theatrical performances, concerts, and so much more. The year also promises the opening of the brand new Humboldt Forum, a soon-to-be site for all manner of events and exhibitions. And once all the educational affairs are over, you’ll have free reign to choose from any number of clubs and bars sure to end each night on the highest note possible!
9.) Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica
Sometimes the stars just align and slap you in the face with a clear message on where you should visit for your next vacation. The Guanacaste province is absolutely one fated location any traveler should at least consider for the year of 2019 and the reasons why are clear.
Liberia’s airport is fresh off of a multimillion-dollar expansion that’s increased its capacity by at least 300,000 more passengers. This will surely do wonders towards making the trek to Costa Rica much more manageable and low-stress. Not only that, the Peninsula Papagayo coastal retreat is also coming off of a multimillion-dollar refresh itself, giving visitors the perfect hub to return to after a long day of sightseeing, sun-bathing, swimming, and drinking!
10.) Grenada, Caribbean
And finally on our list of the best travel destinations for 2019, we have the tropical paradise that is Grenada. Of course, it goes without saying that the location is perfect for those interested in beach visits, tanning sessions, and mixed drinks, but there’s something special that 2019 brings to the mix.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Billfish Tourney, a 4 day fishing tournament that takes contestants and spectators from the Port Louis marina all the way to the east coast of Grenada.
Not much of a fisher? There’s no shortage of events and activities for you to enjoy! In fact, our good friends and Grenada locals at Goats On the Road compiled a list of 61 Awesome Things to do in Grenada! They even have their own list of January 2019 trips and adventures they think are worth the flights and planning.
Well, there you have it. Our top 10 best travel destinations for 2019 we feel you owe it to yourself to visit before 2019 comes to an end!
